Don’t Worry, Be Happy

Ever find yourself worrying about something you have absolutely no control over? Worry not only drains your energy it creates anxiety, depression and insomnia. So don’t worry, be happy! One instant cure for too much unproductive thinking is a walk outside on a warm spring day!

Whether its five minutes on a lunch break or a full afternoon, there’s nothing like a sunny day to put everything into clearer perspective. Life can only be enjoyed in the present, why waste it by looking back with regret or anticipating the worst. Whatever concerns you today probably won’t matter much tomorrow and most likely will never come to pass anyway. Try what I’m becoming a lot better at, step outside and let anything that’s bringing you down evaporate into the sunshine.

I admit it; I’m a worrier by nature. But I’m learning to live a happier and less stressed life by asking myself these questions and you can too.”Is this something I have any power over? If so, what actions can I take to make the situation better?” If not, “What can I do right now to make myself feel better, lighter and more joyful?”

This morning began in a less than pleasant way, until I peeked outside to see one of those perfect weather days in sunny San Jose, CA. I left my wrist watch behind and grabbed the opportunity for a long brisk walk into the nearby town. Shops where buzzing and there were a lot of smiling faces on the people I passed. Resting on a wooden bench I felt the warmth on my skin. Fifteen minutes of vitamin D the natural way is surely a good thing. The perfumed scents and vitality of spring surrounded me; rose bushes beginning to bloom, a few full vibrant yellow blossoms alongside tight pink buds just about to open. A neighbor watched his puppy scamper about, exuberantly sniffing every object for the first time. The only thought in my head now was, “How wonderful to be alive!”

Whatever you’re stressing over right now, let it go. You’ll sleep better if you worry less, relax more and become more spontaneous throughout your day. A warm spring day can help us get there faster until we learn that it’s up to us to create that sunshine everyday within ourselves.
